Think UPF for Sun Protection

Clothing that provides versatile options for outdoor enthusiasts

Think UPF for Sun Protection

Advancements in outdoor equipment never seem to slow down and the same applies to outdoor apparel. More and more apparel companies are embracing the health benefits of skin protection and offering new lines designed to repel sunlight and provide comfort for wearers.

If you haven’t stocked the racks with sun-protective clothing yet, do so now. It is becoming extremely popular with consumers who see it as an easy and effective alternative to sunscreen.

What makes it special?

Customers are likely familiar with SPF ratings for sunscreen. SPF, or sun protection factor, is used to measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet rays, and specifically UVB rays, which are the rays that affect the outer layer of skin and cause sunburn. However, there is another form of UV light that people should be concerned with, called UVA. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are the leading cause of wrinkling and aging skin, and are not reflected with SPF sunscreen. Both types are contributors to skin cancer.

Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) is a rating system used with clothing to represent protection from both UVA and UVB rays. This is the most effective form of sun protection available to consumers. Having UPF apparel options and helping customers understand the benefits over standard SPF sunscreen will lead to more sales and healthier, happier customers.

Why it's a smart stock

Supplying UPF clothing is well worth the floor space as it applies to all outdoor enthusiasts. Anglers, bikers, hikers, climbers and paddlers alike spend ample time in the sun and will purchase products to stay cool and protect their skin. Find a few manufacturers whose product lines fit your usual customer base while offering some diversity.

Companies such as Huk, SIMMS, Aftco, Pelagic and Scales feature several apparel lines geared toward anglers, while companies like Columbia, Patagonia and Coolibar offer extensive UPF clothing lines in multiple styles for a broad range of customers and outdoor activities. And all companies offering both men’s and women’s lines.

Many of the above-mentioned companies also provide options for head-to-toe protection, from long- and short-sleeve shirts to shorts, pants, headwear, neck gaiters and gloves. It’s a great idea to offer a selection of each of these garments so customers can get everything they need at your store.

Also keep in mind that UPF clothing provides a branding and advertising opportunity. Just like other a lot of other apparel, custom UPF attire can be ordered with your store logo and info on it, so customers can spread your name across the great outdoors while protecting their skin and enjoying their favorite pursuit.
